Mumbai, May 3 (IANS) A unique car rally, 'Surf to Snow' covering a distance of 6,000 km between Mumbai to Leh and back was flagged off at the Naval Dockyard here on Thursday, an official said.
The rally will be completed in 10 SUVs by 30 personnel from the Naval Dockyard, Indian Navy officers, sailors and civilians in four different legs to complete the grueling return journey in 30 days.
The car rally is a part of the ongoing Golden Jubilee celebration of the Western Naval Command headquarters here which was set up in Mumbai in 1968. The WNC is the premier command of the Indian Navy and home to the "sword arm" - thes mighty Western Fleet.
The first of its kind, the rally will entail challenges of endurance, strength and resilience of the team driving through difficult landscapes and dizzying heights, as its traverses through the hostile terrain, snowy mountains and cold deserts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir states.
It will test the endurance and mettle of the team as the roads would be unpredictable with gravel, mud and snow, but prove an ideal opportunity for team-building and camaraderie among the participants, besides reaching out to the local populations en route in different regions of the country.
