Sevilla sack coach Montella to round off a poor season for the Italian

Seville, April 28 (IANS) Spanish football club Sevilla on Saturday sacked its Italian head coach Vincenzo Montella following a string of poor results.

The decision meant that Montella, who joined Sevilla at the end of 2017, has been sacked twice in one club football season, following his departure from AC Milan before his move to Spain, reports Efe.

In nine matches since March 13, the Andalusian La Liga team has failed to win a single one and was currently sat in seventh place in the table. They will now eye a spot in the Europa League 2018-19.

"Sevilla FC has dismissed Vincenzo Montella after the poor share of results the club has seen since its last triumph at Old Trafford (in champions League pre-quarterfinal against Manchester United) on March 13," said a club statement.

"Since then, the Nervion has seen nines games without a win, including five defeats, the most recent being on Friday at Valencia," it added.

In 28 matches, Montella had a record of 11 wins, 7 draws and 10 losses. Sevilla said in their website that the Italian will be best remembered for his Copa del Rey run, eliminating Atletico Madrid on route to a final and a historic qualification for the Champions League quarter-finals after defeating Manchester United in the round of 16. At his lowest, Montella led the side in a heavy defeat in the Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona and strung together a disappointing record of 19 La Liga points in 16 matches.

Joaquin Caparros will take over from Montella till the end of the season.
