According to Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Department, "Having received the in-principle approval from the Centre, Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Department will now work on the bid process for the construction of the International Greenfield Airport."
Apart from the socio-economic benefits in the NCR region, the Jewar airport is expected to be a boon to the Delhi airport, the civil aviation department said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Many sectors will benefit with the development of this airport and it will be really beneficial for the people of western UP who have to travel more than 250 km for Delhi or Lucknow Airports," UP Civil Aviation Minister Nand Gopal Gupta was quoted as saying in the statement.
"Due to its strategic location, Jewar airport will also help in decongesting the increasing air traffic and passenger rush at Delhi Airport."
The statement said the Jewar Airport will be able to handle 6 million passengers annually by 2022-23 and 10 million passengers annually by 2029-30.
While 88 per cent of Jewar airport traffic will be domestic, 15 per cent will be international, it said.
On April 4, the Central government had said that it has set up a 'Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee' (PMIC) to expedite the implementation of New Greenfield Noida International Airport at Jewar.
