The killing occurred at 5 p.m. in Hindon Vihar locality in Noida when a group of men shot dead Moti Goel, apparently over a land dispute. The assailants escaped.
The injured businessman with seven bullet wounds was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead, a police officer said.
Goel was facing about a dozen criminal cases being prosecuted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He had been in in Dasna jail for over a decade. Presently he was on bail.
He was accused of forging revenue papers and was said to possess precious land in areas beyond the Hindon river in Ghaziabad district.
Goel had reportedly gone to Hindon Vihar on Monday regarding a land dispute and was shot dead there.
"Prima facie it seems a case of personal enmity," said the police officer.
