The rest of the respondents claim that the hike is over 20 per cent.
According to the survey conducted by Local Circles, a non-governmental organisation, a total of 42 per cent parents have reported a hike of 10 per cent in school fee while 30 per cent reported it to be 20 per cent. The rest of the respondents said that the increase was within 0-10 per cent.
The survey, which was conducted in March for over 15 days, got a total of 29,000 votes for a range of questions over the fee hike, including their respective state government's response on the matter and their expectations from them.
Asked whether their state government had taken any action against the schools for violating the regulation related to fee, a total of 87 per cent respondents out of 7,551 answered 'No'.
About 61 per cent respondents answered that the 10 per cent fee hike was a result of 'lack of regulation' while 25 per cent cited the schools' disregard to government advisories and regulations as the cause.
Fourteen per cent of the respondents blamed the district officers for their failure in enforcing the regulations.
About 72 per cent of parents suggested that the fee hike should be proportionate to the inflation rate, while 22 per cent advocated for a ceiling of 10 per cent on it. A mere six per cent weighed in favour of schools, saying that it should be left to the discretion of schools.
A separate poll was also conducted for Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Haryana to gauge the pattern of fee hike.
About 70 per cent of the respondents in Delhi said that the school fee of their children was increased by at least 10 per cent, with only 29 per cent reported it to be under 10 per cent.
In Telangana, 20 per cent of the respondents said that since last year, the fee hike was below 10 per cent while 60 per cent said the increase was between 10-20 per cent. The rest of the 20 per cent said the increase was more than 20 per cent.
In comparison to the other states, 43 per cent of parents in Haryana said that hike was over 20 per cent. Another 43 per cent reported the hike to be under 10 per cent.
More than half of the respondents in Maharashtra reported the increase in fee to be under 10 per cent and only 18 per cent said that it had increased by more than 20 per cent.
Almost three-fourth parents and guardians in Uttar Pradesh said the fee hike had increased by at least 10 per cent and only 26 per cent reported that it was under 10 per cent.
