TN pollution panel rejects Vedanta’s application to run smelter plant

Chennai, April 10 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu Polltion Control Board (TNPCB) has rejected renewal of consent to operate the Sterlite Copper Smelter unit belonging to Vedanta Ltd, an official statement said.

According to the state government statement, the TNPCB on Monday rejected the renewal of consent to operate the first unit of the Sterlite Copper smelter unit in Tuticorin, as the establishment did not fulfill the conditions laid down by it.

In a regulatory filing with BSE, the company said it had applied for renewal of consent to operate for its existing Smelter plant at Tuticorin.

"The application has been rejected for want of more clarifications. The Company is evaluating further course of action," Vedanta said in its filing.

The smelter plant has been opposed by the local people for a long time alleging pollution.
