Kolkata, April 10 (IANS) The Border Security Force personnel on Tuesday seized a gold bar and gold biscuits worth more than Rs 38 lakh from near the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, a senior officer said.
Acting on a tip off, the troopers of Haridaspur border outpost planned a vigil and intercepted a boat coming from the Bangladesh side, on the Ichamati river but the smuggler allegedly fled from the spot.
"The miscreant jumped off the boat and managed to escape towards Tehroghariya village in Bangladesh. On searching the boat, one gold bar and two gold biscuits weighing around 1.23 kg were recovered," Rabi Ranjan, senior public relation officer of BSF's south Bengal frontier, said in a release.
The seized gold has been handed over to Petrapole customs department for further legal actions.
The BSF has seized more than 2.8 kg of smuggled gold and apprehended one person so far in 2018.
