NCP candidate files nomination for Meghalaya assembly by-poll

Shillong, April 9 (IANS) NCP candidate Krenilla Marak, the widow of the party candidate killed in an IED blast before the February assembly elections, on Monday filed her nomination papers for the April 27 bypoll to the Williamnagar constituency in Meghalaya's East Garo Hill district.

Election to the seat was adjourned following killing of Nationalist Congress Party candidate, Jonathone Sangma, and three others in the blast at Sawilgre area in the district on February 18.

Marak, accompanied by her party supporters and family members, filed her nomination papers before Returning Officer T.M. Sangma.

The nominations will be scrutinised on Wednesday and the last date for the withdrawal of the candidature is April 13.

As many as 9 candidates will be contesting the poll from Williamnagar constituency.

These include Marcuise N Marak from the ruling National People's Party (NPP), former Deputy Chief Minister Deborah C. Marak from the Congress, Mahamsing M. Sangma of United Democratic Party, Santosh R. Marak of Bharatiya Janata Party and four Independent candidates.

Williamnagar assembly constituency has 58 polling stations and a total of 32,345 voters - 16,713 men and 15,632 women.

The counting of votes will be held on May 1.
