Gobar-dhan Yojana’s national launch from Haryana on April 30

Chandigarh, April 6 (IANS) 'Gobar-dhan Yojana', the central scheme for managing and converting cattle dung into manure and biogas, will be launched at the national level from Karnal in Haryana on April 30, a state government spokesman said here on Friday.

Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Uma Bharti and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will launch the scheme, which is aimed at keeping villages clean while increasing the income of farmers and cattle owners.

"With over 300 million cattle -- said to be the highest in the world -- nearly three million tonnes of cattle dung and urine is produced every day. A few European countries and China have made large-scale production of biogas by utilisation of cattle dung," the spokesman pointed out, adding that the central government wanted to convert this waste to energy.

"The biogas produced will not only help in saving electricity, but also provide clean environment to people in rural areas," he added.

Under this scheme, one village in every district of the country would be selected for its implementation. Nearly 700 districts would be covered during the current fiscal.

Haryana is among the leading states in dairy farming.
