NIA to probe case of arms missing from paramilitary camp: Manipur CM

Imphal, March 31 (IANS) Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday said that the NIA has been asked to investigate the case of missing weapons and ammunition from a camp of the state paramilitary force

As many as 56 9 mm pistols and 58 magazines were missing from the camp of 2 Manipur Rifles but it was not yet known when exactly they went missing.

Biren Singh, who also hold charge of the Home Department, said that in view of the fact that it concerns the securirty of the state and the nation as well, the cabinet on Saturday decided to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

"The government has written an official letter to the NIA in this connection. It will also be examined whether there is a political conspiracy in it," he said.

The Chief Minister said that these missing pistols and magazines are part of the 575 pistols which were purchased by the government on October 9, 2014. Commanding officer P. Panjit came to know of the missing pistols a few days ago and police have registered an FIR in this connection.

"There had been the uniform scam in the police department in the past and this angle will be looked into," he said, referring to the case where uniforms meant for the police personnel were allegedly supplied to a militant outfit.
