Taking steps to check tax evasion: Minister

New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) Even as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in January saw an improvement over the previous two months, the government on Friday said it was taking several steps to check evasion and encourage voluntary compliance.

The government is also working towards educating taxpayers about the new tax regime, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

"The steps include introduction of e-way bill, simplification of measures for filing tax returns, steps to capture invoice details of transactions so that the same could be matched with credit taken, and verification of transition credit availed by tax payers," he said.

As per the government data shared in Parliament, GST collections in January were Rs 88,929 crore against Rs 83,716 in December and Rs 85,931 crore in November.

November saw a sharp fall of around 10 per cent in the collections over October when it was Rs 95,132 crore, the highest since the GST was implemented.
