JMM legislator awarded two-year jail, may lose membership

Ranchi, March 23 (IANS) A Ranchi court on Friday convicted Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislator Amit Mahto and pronounced a two-year jail term for him in a case over beating up of a government official.

Following his conviction, he is likely to lose the membership of state assembly.

The charges against Amit Mahto are that he and his supporters beat up a government officials in 2006 and obstructed official work.

Ranchi District Court judge Diwakar Pandey delivered verdict in the 12-year-old case. Later in the day, the court granted bail to the JMM legislator.

As per constitutional norms, he could lose his membership of the House, like two other Jharkhand legislators lost membership after conviction in different cases.

JMM legislator Yogendra Mahto was sentenced by a Ramgarh court for two years and he lost his membership. All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) legislator Kamal Kishore Bhagat also lost his membership after being convicted in a case.
