18 killed in Thailand bus crash

Bangkok, March 22 (IANS) At least 18 people died and 32 were injured in a bus crash in northeastern Thailand, officials said on Thursday.

The accident occurred on Wednesday night on a bend with a steep slope in the district of Wang Nam Khieo, Nakhon Ratchasima province, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Prevention told Efe news.

According to the official, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to cross the opposite lane and come off the road.

The bus was carrying 50 people, 16 of whom died on the spot and two others at the hospital.

The bus had been chartered by a group of tourists from the province of Kalasin and was returning home from the coastal province of Chantaburi.

According to the World Health Organisation, Thailand's roads are the second most dangerous in the world, and about 24,000 people die in road accidents in the country each year.
