London, March 14 (IANS) British broadcaster Sky Sports on Wednesday suspended commentator and former England defender Jamie Carragher until the end of the football season, after he was filmed spitting on a 14-year-old girl following his former team Liverpool's 1-2 Premier League defeat by Manchester United.
The incident took place on Saturday after Carragher was provoked by a fan, who filmed the incident on his phone, and the Sky analyst responded by spitting from his car window, which ended up hitting the girl's face due to the wind, reports Efe.
"Following an internal review, Sky has suspended Jamie Carragher for the remainder of the football season," the British broadcaster said in a statement.
Sky Sports insisted that the commentator was fully responsible for this incident, noting "We will ensure he gets the help he needs to guarantee something like this never happens again."
"Before the start of the next season we will sit down with Jamie to discuss whether he is ready to return to his role," the statement added.
Carragher publicly apologised for his behaviour Sunday night through a message on his Twitter account and on different television shows in successive days.
"Totally out of order and I've apologised personally to all the family this evening. I was goaded three/four times along the motorway while being filmed and lost my rag. No excuse, apologies," Carragher tweeted on Sunday.
