Officers of the rank of Sub-Inspector to Superintendent of Police are eligible for the award, a Home Ministry statement said, adding that medals will be awarded on review after every three years based on the average crime data.
There will be a quota in medals for women investigators.
Based on the average crime data for the last three years, a total of 162 medals will be awarded every year, said the Ministry statement.
Of the total medals, 137 will be for states or union territories and 25 for the central investigating agencies like National Investigation Agency, Central Bureau of Investigation and Narcotics Control Bureau.
Distribution of medals among states/UTs will be on the basis of average of crime registered by them and crime data published by the National Crime Records Bureau for 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) will invite nominations from states, union territories and central investigating agencies based on recommendations from a state-level committee headed by Additional Director General ranked officer.
These nominations will be processed by a screening committee in BPR&D and approved by a sanctioning committee in the Home Ministry, said the statement.
"The names of awardees will be declared on August 15 every year. A certificate signed by the Home Minister along with a medal will be awarded to each winner and their names published in the Gazette of India," it added.
