Metro proposal akin to Indira’s ‘garibi hatao’ initiative: Ex-CM

Bhopal, Feb 27 (IANS) Senior BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Babulal Gaur on Tuesday taunted his own party by comparing the proposed Metro rail in the state's cities to that of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's "garibi hatao" initiative.

Construction of Metro rail in Bhopal and Indore is under consideration.

"Submitting the plan for Metro construction to the Centre is similar to Indira Gandhi's proposal to get a resolution on 'garibi hatao' passed in Parliament," Gaur told media persons here.

On Monday, Governor Anandiben Patel in her address during the Assembly Budget Session said Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Sagar and Satna are under active consideration for the Smart City project.

Also, she added, the proposal for Metro construction in Bhopal and Indore has been sent to the Centre.

Gaur has been the Minister for Urban Administration and Metro rail has been his dream project. To start the project, he took several initiatives, including loans from Japan, but it did not take off.
