9 students arrested in Assam for vandalism

Guwahati, Feb 21 (IANS) Nine students of the Assam Engineering College (AEC) have been arrested for vandalising a wedding venue early on Wednesday.

The arrests were made following a complaint by the concerned family at the Jalukbari police station, police said.

"Large number of students of AEC Jalukbari entered the marriage venue at 1 a.m. and vandalised it. They had beaten up families and relatives of bride and bridegroom. They also ransacked furniture and damaged several vehicles," a police official said.

The students also snatched away a gold chain and threatened people attending the marriage with dire consequences, he said.

Immediately after receiving information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The marriage was held without any further problem, he added.

The police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The incident, reportedly, is a follow up of two engineering students allegedly being beaten up by some persons attending the marriage.

The angry students informed the other hostel students, who then came in a large number and vandalised the bride's house.
