Guwahati, Feb 6 (IANS) The Assam Assembly's budget session began on a noisy note here on Tuesday as the opposition parties protested during Governor Jagdish Mukhi's address to the house, forcing him to cut short his speech.
Due to the protest, the Governor read out only the last page of his long speech, which was later considered read.
Members of the opposition Congress displayed placards highlighting their demands and various other issues such as updation of the National Citizens Register, making public the Naga Peace Accord, law and order, violence in Dima Hasao, restart of two paper mills, and coal syndicates.
The Congress alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance governments in Assam and at the Centre were run by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi made the charge while referring to the decoration in saffron and green colours of the Assembly's Central Hall as well as the open space where Mukhi organised a tea party, which was boycotted by the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front.
Gogoi said: "It is a BJP effort to saffronise the Assembly".
"It's a matter of concern that the RSS is running the government in Assam. RSS leaders like Mohan Bhagwat are running the government at the Centre. Now they (ruling party) are trying to capture the Assembly," Gogoi said, wondering aloud how someone could decorate it with party flags without the Speaker's permission.
He also slammed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police for being "fully under the control of the RSS".
"I was told earlier during V.K. Pipersenia's appointment as the Chief Secretary about his RSS links, but I did not take it seriously then," the Congress leader said
Pipersenia was appointed in 2015 during Congress rule.
