13 inmates to run in police organised half-marathon in Kolkata

Kolkata, Jan 6 (IANS) Thirteen inmates from three Kolkata correctional homes will for the first time participate in a half-marathon organised by the city police department here on January 7, a senior officer said on Saturday.

The inmates from Presidency Central Correctional Home, Alipore Central Correctional Home and Dudum Correctional Home run along with celebrities and citizens in the 'Safe Drive Save Life Half Marathon' to be started from Kolkata's iconic Red Road.

"We sent out the notice to the correctional homes and 15 inmates voluntarily registered for the event. However, 13 inmates would be running in the half-marathon on Sunday as the other two have health issues," Biplab Das, Deputy Inspector General Jail told IANS.

He said no extra security arrangement would be needed for monitoring the inmates as the entire route would be kept under police vigil.

The marathon, named after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's road safety initiative, is organised to raise traffic awareness among the citizens.

There would be three distance segments of 21 km, 10 km and 5 km in the event.

"The inmates would participate in the 5 km distance segment," the officer added.
