Discontent in Gujarat could have been channelised better: CPI-M

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) The discontent among the people against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments in Gujarat and the Centre could have been channelised "more effectively" if there had been a "credible opposition with an alternative programme", the CPI-M said on Monday.

The Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) also expressed happiness at the victory of one of its candidates in Himachal Pradesh after 20 years.

It said that the BJP, that just scraped through, does not have much to celebrate as erosion in its support is clearly visible.

"The Gujarat assembly election results show that the BJP has nothing much to celebrate. Although it has won a majority to form a government, it has got the lowest number of seats in the last two decades," the CPI-M said.

"Its tally of around 100 seats is a big fall from the 'Mission 150' declared by BJP President Amit Shah. The erosion in support can also be seen from the fact that in the Lok Sabha election of 2014, the BJP had led in 165 assembly segments," it said.

In Himachal Pradesh, where the BJP routed the ruling Congress and got huge majority, the Left party said that Himachal verdict is "against the corruption and misrule of the Virbhadra Singh government".

"The CPI-M has won an assembly seat and will be represented in the state assembly after a gap of twenty years," it said.
