Top UN official meets North Korean Foreign Minister

Seoul, Dec 7 (IANS) The UN Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs met North Korea's Foreign Minister in Pyongyang on Thursday.

The meeting between Jeffrey Feltman and Ri Yong-ho took place barely a week after North Korea launched its most sophisticated intercontinental ballistic missile to date, an action that may lead to a new round of UN Security Council sanctions, Efe news reported.

Feltman arrived in North Korea on Tuesday and it is the first trip by a UN official to the isolated country in over seven years. Ri held a conversation with Feltman, who also paid a courtesy visit to the Supreme People's Assembly (North Korea's Parliament).

The UN official was scheduled to meet other representatives of the North Korean regime to discuss matters of mutual interest and concerns.

He will also meet diplomats in Pyongyang as well as the UN team in North Korea, where the UN operates six agencies with 50 international staff.
