Kolkata, Dec 6 (IANS) Eight persons, including one woman, were arrested and over 8.8 kgs of yellow coloured metallic biscuits believed to be gold of foreign origin were seized here on Wednesday, officials said.
A statement issued by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said acting on a tip-off, the eight persons who came to Kolkata from Aizawl were arrested at domestic arrival of Kolkata airport.
"The search of the eight passengers resulted in recovery of yellow coloured metallic biscuits believed to be gold of foreign origin concealed in their rectums," the statement said.
These gold biscuits were wrapped in adhesive tapes and were further wrapped in rubber balloons and put into the rectums of all the intercepted passengers, the statement added.
During the current financial year, the DRI has seized over 174 kg of gold valued at nearly Rs 52 crore from West Bengal and north-eastern states. The gold has been smuggled from Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan.
