Delhi tops cities’ crime chart: NCRB report

New Delhi, Nov 30 (IANS) Delhi topped the crime chart for cities with a share of nearly 40 per cent of the total crimes (under IPC) reported in 2016, a National Crime Records Bureau report released on Thursday said.

The national capital accounted for 38.8 per cent of the total crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) reported in the cities, followed distantly by Bengaluru with 8.9 per cent and Mumbai with 7.7 per cent.

The report recorded an increase of 2.6 per cent in the total number of crimes across the country from last year.

A total of 48,31,515 cognisable crimes -- which include major crimes like rape, murder, kidnappings and rioting -- comprising "29,75,711 IPC crimes" and "18,55,804 Special and Local Laws (SLL)" crimes were reported in 2016.

In 2015, the number of total cognisable crimes reported was 47,10,676, nationally.

Among the states, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of IPC crimes at 9.5 per cent, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 8.9 per cent, Maharashtra at 8.8 per cent, and Kerala at 8.7 per cent.
