Kejriwal slams MCDs, says will allot Rs 474 cr for sanitation staff

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday asked the three BJP-ruled city municipal corporations (MCDs) to explain what they were doing with funds allocated to them by his government, following complaints by 'safai karamcharis' over unpaid wages.

Kejriwal said that Rs 474 crore will be released by the Delhi government to the MCDs for safai karamcharis and called a cabinet meeting for Thursday to approve the funds, according to an official statement.

His announcement came after a delegation of safai karamcharis met him here.

Kejriwal said that the Delhi government was paying the three MCDs more money than what was paid by previous governments and it was surprising to know that the safai karamcharis were facing problems.

"Where is the money going? Why are they not having money to pay you? We are giving much more than our predecessors.

"While in 2013-14, the East DMC got Rs 287.72 crore compared to Rs 948 crore in 2016-17. Similarly, the North DMC received Rs 808.77 crore in 2013-14 compared to Rs 1318.26 crores in 2016-17," he said, according to the statement.
