Law Day conference to discuss judicial overreach

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) A two-day celebration of National Law Day starting on Saturday will see deliberations by senior government functionaries and legal experts on topics like judicial overreach and delayed justice, the Law Commission said on Friday.

The event is being organised by the Law Commission and NITI Aayog and will see participation from the President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice and several senior ministers, Law Commission Chairman Justice (retd) B.S. Chauhan said.

The Law Commission has identified four broad themes for speakers to speak on.

These are 'Judicial activism'; 'Judicial review and parliamentary democracy: Balancing separation of powers'; 'Appointments to higher judiciary: Constraints of collegium system and reforms ahead'; and 'Structural reforms for overcoming delays in justice delivery'.

The conference would be inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday. The valedictory session on Sunday would be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice Dipak Misra.

It is for the first time the Law Commission is spearheading celebrations of the National Law Day.
