BJP asks Congress to come clean over allegations against party leader’s relative

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) The BJP on Monday asked the Congress to come clean over allegations of "wrongdoings" by a relative of a Congress leader who plays a major role in the party in Gujarat over farmer subsidy related to import of potash.

"Congress is synonymous with corruption. They used to speak about farmers but we know there were many scams in all agricultural schemes particularly in fertilisers and urea. Another fertiliser scam happened between 2007 and 2009," Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters.

He said that potash is not available in India and the country is dependent on imports.

"It is Rs 12,000 per ton and there is a subsidy of about Rs 7,500 per ton. It is meant for farmers but many vested interests and companies ganged up to steal the scheme by importing, taking subsidy and not giving it to farmers.

"They changed the title and exported it which is restricted. A relative of the Congress leader was fined by customs because of wrong doing. Investigative agencies would perform their duties but we want to know from Congress what is their stand," he said.
