Judo World Championship kicks off

Judo World Championship kicks offRabat (Morocco), Nov 12 (IANS) The Judo World Championship 2017 started in the Moroccan city of Marrakech featuring 58 judokas, including 40 men and 18 women, from 28 countries and regions.

The two-day tournament, which began on Saturday, has been organized for the first time in an African country, reports Xinhua news agency.

The championship also represents a new chapter for prize money in judo.

 

A record amount of prize money will be on the table. Gold medallists will earn a record 100,000 Euro ($116,640) with silver medallists scooping 50,000 Euro ($58,320) and bronze medallists taking home 25,000 Euro ($29,160).

The prize money continues beyond the medallists as judoka who finish fifth will earn 10,000 Euro ($11,660).
