SRFTI revokes expulsion of 14 girls with warning

Kolkata, Oct 31 (IANS) The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) here has agreed to revoke the rustication of 14 female students, its director said on Tuesday. However, it is not unconditional, the director said.

Agitating students had kicked-off a relay strike October 28 pressing for the unconditional revocation of the expulsions.

"The institution is running normally. The expulsion order has been revoked but not unconditionally. It will carry a minor warning. The revocation order will be issued only when the girls move into their hostel and the boys in their respective rooms," SRFTI Director Debamitra Mitra told IANS.

Expulsion of the girl students allegedly over "hostel segregation" after they refused to vacate the old hostel rooms and shift to a new girls' hostel on the campus, triggered protests among the students fraternity since October 17.

The impasse between institute's students and authorities had dragged on till a fortnight.
