In a first, Goa to host women priests

In a first, Goa to host women priestsPanaji, Oct 31 (IANS) For the first time in Goa, a group of women 'purohits' (priests) will usher in the ritualistic celebration of 'Tulsi Vivaah' on the Raj Bhavan grounds near here, an official statement from the Governor's House said on Tuesday.

"This is for the first time in Goa when a trained group of women will discharge their duties as purohits. This is also a coincidence that the jajman (host) will be Governor, who will be performing the kanyadan of Tulsi, being a woman herself," the statement said.

'Tulsi Vivaah', which falls on Wednesday (November 1) this year, is ritualistically celebrated in Hindu homes in Goa and other parts of the country, and marks the beginning of the wedding season for Hindus.

It is a ceremonial marriage between Tulsi (basil plant) and Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu.

The women purohits are Shweta Parab, Karishma Satelkar and Rohini Naik from Tapobhumi Sampraday, Kundaim, Ponda, the statement also said.

Tapobhumi is a popular mutt in eastern Goa, located 25 km from here.
