American woman held in Pakistan

Islamabad, Oct 27 (IANS) An American woman has been taken into custody in Rawalpindi in Pakistan after she divorced a Pakistani she married but refused to leave the country although her visa had expired.

The Dawn reported on Friday that 31-year-old Elizabeth Marie Lancaster, originally from West Virgina, came to Pakistan 18 months ago after marrying a Pakistani man, Adnan Khan.

Lancaster stayed with her husband for 18 months before they divorced. She was supposed to leave for the US on October 24 but refused to go.

She was given a multiple entry Pakistani tourist visa for 180 days on May 13 last year in Peshawar, valid till November 12, 2016. It was further extended till May 1, 2017 and then up to October 19.

According to the police, Lancaster was staying in a hotel in Satellite Town in Rawalpindi and that the hotel may have asked her to leave as she did not have any money.

The American woman will be produced before a court "as she has been refusing to go back home", the Dawn said.
