Trump taps state legislator as US envoy to OAS

Washington, Oct 26 (IANS) President Donald Trump on Thursday nominated Carlos Trujillo, a member of the Florida House of Representatives, to represent the US before the Organization of American States (OAS), the White House said.

Trujillo, 34, was first elected to Florida's lower house in 2010 and currently chairs the chamber's budget committee. His nomination requires Senate confirmation, Xinhua reported.

The Republican politician represents Florida's majority-Hispanic 115th District.

Trujillo has combined his service in the legislature with practicing law. He spent four years as a prosecutor with the state attorney's office in Miami-Dade before becoming in 2011 a founding partner of the law firm Trujillo, Vargas, Gonzalez and Hevia.

A graduate of Spring Hill College and Florida State College of Law, Trujillo speaks fluent Spanish.

If confirmed by the Senate, Trujillo will replace Kevin Sullivan, a career diplomat who has been the acting representative to the OAS since July 2016.
