Four Jamia students booked for brawl

Four Jamia students booked for brawlNew Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Four students of the Jamia Millia Islamia were booked after they assaulted a student for celebrating Diwali festival on the campus, police said on Wednesday.

Police said the accused have been identified as Ehteshamul Haq, Qazi Ammar Alam, Jawed Malik and Sahil Ahmed -- all students of law faculty. They were booked for voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint and criminal act by several persons with common intention.

The incident occurred on October 12, when the victim, Ajay Kumar Jha, also a law student, was leaving for his home in west Delhi after attending a Freshers' Party, police said.

He was overpowered at the campus gate and assaulted by the four accused who were joined by three of their associates who were outsiders.

Jha, in his complaint, alleged that he along with other students celebrated Diwali at the main campus on October 12, which later became a topic of discussion in the institution.

In the evening, he was surrounded by seven youths who beat him up, the FIR said.

They punched his face for at least 15 minutes and dragged him until blood started oozing out of his ear. They also hurled religious abuses at him, it said.

"The attackers fled after a police vehicle reached the spot," the FIR said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Romil Baaniya said: "We have registered a case against the four students. Jha received internal injuries in the scuffle."
