Chennai, Oct 23 (IANS) The DMK on Monday told the Election Commission to delete all bogus voters from the electoral rolls of R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency before holding by-polls there later this year.
DMK MP and Organisation Secretary R.S. Bharathi met Rajesh Lakhoni, Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, and submitted a petition to this effect.
According to the petition, only after deletion of bogus voters, could the by-election for R.K. Nagar take place.
The seat fell vacant after the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa last year.
The DMK said the atmosphere in the constituency should also be conducive to holding of free and fair election.
"Despite repeated requests being made by our party to delete the bogus votes, the Election Commission of India, has not done its duty so far, which has resulted in loss of confidence and neutrality in the Election Commission of India. We hope that such dereliction of duty would not occur hereafter," the petition notes.
The DMK has requested the Election Commission for a special team to carry out deletion of double/multiple entries in the voters list.
The party also wanted the Election Commission to link the Aadhaar Card with voters to ensure complete verification before the by-election.
The poll was earlier scheduled to be held on April 12 this year, but was cancelled by the EC after allegations of voters being bribed.
