MP police officer, who forced farmers to undress, transferred

Bhopal/Tikamgarh, Oct 13 (IANS) An inquiry report has confirmed that farmers were forced to shed their clothes to semi-nude condition in the lockup of Dehat Police Station in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, an official said.

Based on the preliminary report, state's Home Minister Bhupendra Singh has ordered the transfer of the Dehat Police Station incharge out of the district, sending the entire police station staff to police lines and initiating a departmental inquiry into the matter.

Singh on Friday told media persons in Bhopal: "The inquiry report has come and action was taken after confirmation of the incident. The report is under scrutiny and further action will be initiated after that."

Farmers in Tikamgarh district, led by the Congress party, had held a protest rally on October 3. As they were returning in tractor-trolleys to their homes in the evening, they were taken into police custody and kept in the Dehat Police Station lockup.

According to reports, the police personnel forced them to take off their clothes in the lockup. The farmers were left in just undergarments.

After the incident got highlighted, the Home Minister asked the Inspector General of Police to conduct an inquiry.
