Delhi HC seeks response on sanitation workers’ strike

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre, Delhi government, and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on a plea for direction to corporation sanitation workers to end their protest strike and resume work.

The plea by Rahul Birla also sought directions for immediate payment of salary arrears to the workers who went on an indefinite strike on October 11.

The petitioner also urged the court to direct the authorities to immediately implement the 4th Finance Commission recommendations.

EDMC's counsel said the court had last year directed the Delhi government to implement the commission recommendations but no step had been taken thereafter.

The Delhi government told the court that it will release money for salaries within three days.

The sanitation workers of all civic agencies in Delhi had struck work in January 2015, October 2015, and January 2016 also, after which city roads overflowed with garbage, the petitioner said.
