Bengal government jobs for slain policeman’s wife, father

Kolkata, Oct 13 (IANS) The West Bengal government will give jobs to the widow and father of police sub-inspector Amitava Malik, who was killed during a clash between the security forces and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha activists in Darjeeling on Friday.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who telephoned the bereaved family and spoke to the slain policeman's father, announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh from her relief fund.

"The Chief Minister is deeply pained by what has happened. She has released an amount of Rs 5 lakh from her relief fund for the grieving family," said Education Minister Partha Chatterjee.

Malik's widow would be given a job in the Police Department and his father will be employed in the Education Department, he said.

The minister said he, along with Food and Civil Supplies Minister Jyotipriya Mallick, would receive the body when it is flown here on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Malik's mother demanded exemplary punishment for those who killed her son.

"I want punishment for those who did the ultimate harm to my son," she said, weeping inconsolably.
