Indian envoy among diplomatic team visiting Myanmar's Rakhine stateNew Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) India's Ambassador to Myanmar Vikram Misri was among delegation of 50 diplomats that visited Rakhine state which has seen exodus of Rohingya Muslims after incidences of violence earlier this month, the External Affairs Ministry said on Thursday.

Answering queries at the weekly media briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that the diplomats were taken to the villages in northern districts of Maungdaw and Rathedaung.

"The government of Myanmar had invited the diplomats based there to visit the Rakhine state. Our ambassador in Myanmar did participate in this trip which was orgnaised on October 2. Around 50 diplomats were taken to half-a-dozen villages in the northern districts of of Maungdaw and Rathedaung," he said.

 

India had last month expressed its deep concern about the situation in Rakhine State and the outflow of refugees from that region. It had said that situation in Rakhine be handled with restraint and maturity, focusing on the welfare of the civilian population alongside those of the security forces.

Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday called for speeding up measures for humanitarian aid, rehabilitation, resettlement and development in the conflict-torn Rakhine state.
