Farm sector in Telangana to get 24-hour power supply

Hyderabad, Oct 11 (IANS) Farmers in Telangana will get 24-hour electricity supply from Rabi crop season next year, officials said on Wednesday.

The state government is spending Rs 12,610 crore to create the necessary infrastructure for the supply, said officials.

The farm sector in the new state is currently getting nine-hour free supply during daytime.

As part of the arrangements for 24-hour supply, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday will inaugurate 400 KV substation built at a cost of Rs.1,600 crore in Suryapet.

Telangana State Generation Corporation (TS Genco) Chairman and Managing Director D. Prabhakar Rao briefed the Chief Minister on the power generation, distribution and supply in the state.

The official had said recently that the state has 22 lakh agricultural pump sets.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's office, industry, commercial and domestic sectors in the state are getting round-the-clock power supply since October 2014, five months after the formation of the state.

The authorities are building new sub stations, lines and transformers for 24-hour supply to farmers.

Besides 24-hour power supply to the farm sector, an in-depth study was done about the technical problems and issues which arise while giving quality and uninterrupted supply to industry, commercial and domestic sectors.

Prabhakar Rao said the distribution was planned based on the demand for the power supply. The maximum demand as on date is 9, 600 MW and is expected to go up by 50 percent for 24-hour power supply to the farm sector, for lift irrigation projects, Mission Bhagiratha, aimed supplying drinking water to every household and for the growing industrial sector.
