Chandigarh, Oct 9 (IANS) Campaigning for the bypoll to the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat ended on Monday with main political parties organising rallies, roadshows and door-to-door campaigning in a last ditch effort to woo voters.
Eleven candidates are in the fray for the by-election on Wednesday, though the main fight is between Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Swarn Salaria, Congress' Sunil Kumar Jakhar, who is the Punjab Congress President, and Aam Aadmi Party's Maj. Gen. Suresh Kumar Khajuria (retd).
The result will be announced on October 15.
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who held a roadshow in the constituency on Monday, expressed confidence of winning the by-election with a "historic" margin.
"We would win this seat with a margin of over two lakh votes," he told reporters.
Senior Punjab BJP leaders and Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal held rallies in support of Salaria.
The bypoll will see a tough fight between the BJP and the state's ruling Congress. The Congress, fresh from its emphatic win in the state assembly elections, is set to give a tough fight to the BJP, which is trying to retain the seat.
The AAP, the main opposition party in the Punjab Assembly, could play a spoiler for both the parties.
The Lok Sabha seat fell vacant in April this year following the passing away of veteran actor Vinod Khanna due to cancer.
Khanna had stormed the Congress bastion on his electoral debut in 1998, defeating five-time Congress MP Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder. He held the seat till 2004 and then from 2014 till his demise.
The BJP preferred Salaria over Khanna's widow Kavita.
