17.5 mn users' data leaked from Disqus database in 2012San Francisco, Oct 7 (IANS) US-based web communication service provider Disqus has revealed that it suffered a security breach in 2012 that involved the data of 17.5 million users.

Hackers allegedly stole data including snapshots of usernames, associated email addresses dating back to 2007, as well as sign-up and last login dates in plain text, Engadget reported on Saturday.

The hackers also accessed passwords for a third of the total user accounts, which were in hashed form and might have decrypted them.

According to Disqus, it learned of the leak after an independent security researcher Troy Hunt of "Have I Been Pwned" group alerted about the breach that impacted a database from 2012.

The company issued an official apology to its users and was currently investigating the incident.

As a precautionary measure, the company has asked all affected users to reset passwords.
