New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS) A painting exhibition on life and works of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was inaugurated here on Friday by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

Aiming to inspire and awaken the youth about life and works of Shivaji, the exhibition at India Gandhi National Centre for the Arts has been organised by Maharashtra Bhushan awardee Baba Saheb Purandare, who has been spearheading a campaign to establish Shivaji as a national icon.

Purandare, who has written several books on Shivaji, told IANS that world must know about Shivaji.

"Shivaji was not only a great warrior but a great administrator and leader. His life and works are useful to create a nation," he said.

The exhibition shows around 120 paintings, mostly oil-based works of famous painter Deepak Gore, Srikant Chaughule and his son Gautam.

The elder Chaughule told IANS that said that it took 14 years to prepare these 120 paintings and he converted the visualisation into canvas under the guidance of Gore.

"We travelled to the places related to Shivaji, stayed there for months to get the historical details and first-hand experience of his works," he said.

He said all his paintings are based on oil but the detailing and finishing gives the paintings a real and 3D effect.
