Gandhi assassination: SC seeks counsel opinion on probe

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Friday appointed senior counsel A. Saran to examine the material produced by a petitioner to ascertain whether there was need for further probe into the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

While asking Saran to examine the material produced by Mumbai- based IT Professional Pankaj Chandra Phadnis, the bench headed by Justice S.A. Bobde however said that prima facie they don't find the material to be sufficient to order further investigation.

The petitioner appeared in person to argue his case.

The petitioner has told the court that there were three people who were involved in the assassination of Gandhi and only two of them, including Nuthuram Godse, were sentenced to death.

He said that since the death sentence was executed on November 15, 1949 and Supreme Court came into existence on January 26, 1950, therefore the assassination of Gandhi was never looked at by the top court on merits.
