UP sets timeline for sewage, drinking water projects

Lucknow, Oct 4 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam officials have been asked to wrap up by October-end work on the detailed project reports of the remaining drinking water reorganisation and sewerage projects of 61 selected cities, an official said on Wednesday.

The directive has been issued by Chief Secretary Rajiv Kumar so that work could be completed in time on projects aimed at providing household connections for drinking water and sewerage to the residents of these cities.

"The report has to be sent to the state government for approval by December 2," the official added.

Kumar, who reviewed work of the state water corporation earlier this week, has also directed the officials concerned to fix yearly priorities to complete by 2020 the remaining projects under central government funding and those being undertaken through foreign aid assistance.

The proposed amount to be spent on these projects is Rs 21,000 crore.

Instructions have also been issued to stop the discharge of dirty drain water into rivers and to ensure that the functional sewage treatment plants are working to their optimum.

The Chief Secretary said seven projects under the Namami Gange project have been referred to the central government for upgradation.
