Woman, confined by parents for marrying at will, rescued by DCW

New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) A 25-year-old woman, allegedly illegally confined to her house by her parents for marrying against their wishes, was rescued after she called the 181 helpline number, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) said on Tuesday.

"DCW's 181 Women Helpline rescued Deepika (name changed) from her house. At present, she is happy and united with her husband," DCW Chairperson Swati Jaihind said in a statement.

"The girl was in love with a boy and told her parents about the relationship. Her parents were annoyed and refused to get her married to him. On September 25, she solemnized her relationship in a temple without her parents' consent," she said.

But as Deepika went to her husband's house and informed her family about the marriage on phone, her infuriated parents came over there, beat up her husband and forcibly took Deepika with them to their house, the statement said.

Confined to the house and her phone confiscated, Deepika managed to steal her father's phone and called the 181 Women helpline on September 27.

A DCW team, along with police, rescued the woman on the same day and brought her to a police station. Police were asked to provide protection to the couple, said Jaihind.
