Ghaziabad, Sep 23 (IANS) Ghaziabad has sought a massive augmentation in its traffic police force at par with Uttar Pradesh's 'grade A' cities as the city is a gateway to the national capital, an official said.
Superintendent of Police, Traffic, S.N. Singh told IANS that on the initiative of the Traffic Directorate, they have sent a request to the government to be included in the 'grade A' cities, despite not meeting their criteria (50 lakh population, 20 lakh registered vehicles) with a 40 lakh population and around 10 lakh vehicles.
However, he said that they have cited that the city, located adjacent to the national capital, has a "floating population" of 10 lakh and twice the number of vehicles on the road during peak hours.
At present, the traffic police strength is only 136 constables, 45 head constables, 5 Sub Inspectors, 2 traffic Inspectors and one Circle Officer, but on getting 'grade A' status, they would have 1,400 constables, 250 head constables, 60 Sub Inspectors, 12 Traffic Inspectors and 4 Circle Officers.
"The proposal has been sent 20 days ago which is likely to be presented before the government within this current week. After receiving this traffic police force numbers, the city would be among the best-traffic managed city of UP," said the officer.
