Pink Line trials till South Campus station begin

Pink Line trials till South Campus station beginNew Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS) The Delhi Metro on Friday began "full signal" trials between the Majlis Park and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus stations lying on the upcoming Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar).

These runs are an significant indication of the near completion of the track because the trials with signals are conducted only once all the civil work is finished.

The stretch will see test-runs of driverless metros (Unattended Train Operations) equipped with a "new age communication based train control signalling system", which will help increase frequency of trains.

The new siganalling system will "enable the movement of trains with a frequency of about 90 to 100 seconds, thus significantly enhancing the carrying capacity of the Delhi Metro system", the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a statement.

The 20-km stretch has 12 stations (eight elevated and four underground) including four interchange stations - Azadpur, Netaji Subhash Place, Rajouri Garden and Dhaula Kuan (through a footover bridge).

The trials between Shakarpur and Mayapuri section (6.5 km) on the same line were started in June.

This is the first time that trials are being conducted on such a long section "in one go", the DMRC said.

Longest of the entire network, Pink Line with a length of 59 km will girdle almost entire Ring Road bringing connectivity to a large number of commuters.

To be started in phases, the new line is expected to be fully operational by March next year, except a stretch at Trilokpuri owing to land acquisition issue.

"The line is planned to be opened in stages by March 2018 (except Trilokpuri to Mayur Vihar Pkt-1 section due to land issue at Trilokpuri)," the DMRC said.
