Offensive begins to recapture Iraq’s Anbar

Offensive begins to recapture Iraq's AnbarBaghdad, Sep 19 (IANS) Iraqi forces on Tuesday started a new military offensive to recapture two areas in Anbar province from the Islamic State (IS) terror group, a military officer said.

The towns of Rayhana and Anah located near the Syrian border, were seized by the IS in 2014, reports Efe news.

The operation comes three days after the Iraqi forces liberated the western town of Akashat, a strategic area rich in minerals, including phosphates.

In August, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the radical group in Tel Afar, west of Mosul.

The IS still controls the western areas of Anbar.
