'The Tonight Show...' to donate $1 mn to hurricane relief

Los Angeles, Sep 6 (IANS) Television host Jimmy Fallon has announced that "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" will donate $1 million to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund set up by Houston Texans football star J.J. Watt.

Fallon made the announcement on Tuesday night's episode of the show. The fund has amassed over $20 million so far, reports eonline.com.

The usually funny host took a sombre moment to acknowledge the tragedy that struck southern Texas last week.

Speaking to the camera, Fallon said: "Last week we saw the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey on the state of Texas. But in the face of this tragedy, we saw good."

"We saw communities banding together. Neighbours helping neighbours. Strangers helping strangers. So many heroes -- people like Mattress Mack, who opened up his stores and showrooms for those who needed shelter...

"The group of people who formed a human chain to save a man from a flooded SUV... And J.J. Watt, from the Houston Texans, who has raised over $18 million dollars to provide food, water and supplies to the victims."

The TV host added: "I'm proud to say that our show, 'The Tonight Show', is donating $1 million dollars to J.J.'s fund. Thank you, J.J."

He then welcomed Victoria White, Marquist Taylor and their Houston gospel choir to sing a moving rendition of "Lean on me".

Stars like Pink and Leonardo DiCaprio have also contributed to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund.
