Bangladeshi-origin youth in US charged with IS links

Dhaka, Aug 30 (IANS) An American youth of Bangladeshi descent has been charged in the US for attempting to join the Islamic State, after his capture in a Middle Eastern country, a media report said.

Parveg Ahmed came under investigation in New York after his arrest in June, bdnews24 reported.

The 22-year-old had travelled to Saudi Arabia under the guise of observing Ramadan, according to the US Attorney's Office.

The FBI found that he was planning to join the terror group in Syria after scanning his computer and other documents in his father's home in Queens.

Ahmed was charged with attempting to provide material support to the IS, after which he was produced in a Brooklyn federal court on Tuesday.

He was arrested at John F Kennedy Airport after being deported to the US on August 28, the news report said.

Ahmed had graduated from Stuyvesant High School but had become irregular with his studies after entering Hunter College in New York.

"As we allege, Parveg Ahmed attempted to travel to Syria aligning himself with ISIS instead of his fellow Americans," FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney said in a statement.

"Like others before him who chartered a similar path to join this violent terror group, Ahmed now finds his journey ends the same way -- in a New York courtroom answering for his actions."

FBI agents found a note of farewell meant for two of Ahmed's family members. "Forgive me if l was harsh/overbearing. Please remember all that I tried to teach you," said the note dated June l5.
