Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 22 (IANS) The indefinite protest by five legislators of the Congress-led opposition in the Kerala Assembly to press for sacking of Health Minister K.K. Shailaja, who faces nepotism charges, entered its second day on Tuesday.
While the legislators spent Monday night at the foyer of the assembly, the opposition was on Tuesday too in protest mode right from the Question Hour.
Each time Shailaja, who was held in a recent Kerala High Court judgement to have misused her office to appoint a member of the state child rights panel, rose to answer, the opposition members were also on their feet.
The opposition also demanded that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan respond to their demands as on Monday it was he who had spoken when they raised the issue of appointing the members to the state Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
While Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan intervened and said he cannot insist the government that the answer should be given by the Chief Minister, Shailaja got up but as she started to speak, the Congress-led UDF opposition walked out of the house and sat with the five protesting legislators.
The day saw an interesting scene when former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan arrived at the entrance of the assembly as the opposition was seated in the foyer.
Seeing Achuthananadan, the legislators asked him why he was silent on the issue. Achuthanandan replied with a smile and the slogan shouting died down as the communist veteran entered the floor.
Even after the opposition walked out, the assembly went forward with the business listed for the day and after completing it, the house was adjourned for the day.
As the opposition is adamant on its demand, the session, scheduled to end on Thursday, may be adjourned sine die on Wednesday.
Now all eyes are on the high court after the government on Monday requested that since the single judge's verdict was pronounced without hearing the Minister, the remarks against her be removed.
According to informed sources, if they are not withdrawn, things might turn tough for Shailaja as this is the first time in the state that a minister has been so rapped.
